Revision of the Battle for Hue

A US Army infantry officer serving as an Information Officer for a South Vietnamese ARVN division wrote this book. It describes in an "I was there" style many aspects of the Battle for Hue not covered by the other Hue battle books, such as those by Hammel and Nolan. In particular this volume records the accomplishments of ARVN airborne and cavalry units during the battle. The author presents the opinion that far from being useless appendages to the Marines during the battle for Hue, the ARVN units were actually the most critical components to the ultimate victory. The author also highlights the efforts by the US Army airbone and cavalry units to cut off the North Vietnamese fighting in Hue from their external sources of supply and reinforcement, thus easing the role of the ARVN and Marine units within the city itself. As a former Marine myself (former corporal, but not a Vietnam veteran), I found that this revision of the history of the battle of Hue (and who actually did what) to be a necessary correction to the standard "we Marines did it all" version of the battle.
The two negative comments about the book are: 1.The writing style intertwines the author's personal experiences and historical facts in a way that can be jarring to the reader, and 2. While there are four good maps, lacking is a map showing the movements of the military units as described in the text, leaving the reader to try to figure out just where everybody is at any given time.
